Villa Soriano

Villa Soriano

The first town in Uruguay, Villa Soriano, was founded in 1624. Each corner and little street of this site represents a footprint of the colonial era, and iconic buildings are a reminder of that time, such as the church Villa Santo Domingo de Soriano. Villa Soriano has a natural wealth that is given by the river. Therefore, a walk along the riverside is essential. Along the river you can visit the wooden pier on which stands a row of lanterns and was a key aspect in the advance of commerce in this area. The old Olivera Hotel, converted into the first river station in Uruguay, has various services for tourists. The Tourism Office works there, as does the prefecture and customs, and in the summer there is a cafeteria. The Casa Mafetán, where you find the Municipal Library and the Regional Museum, is another characteristic building in the town.
