Grutas del Palacio (Flores)

Grutas del Palacio (Flores)

Declared a geo-park by Unseco, the Grutas del Palacio are a unique place in Uruguay. They are a geological formation with the appearance of corridors that date back 55 million years and form a part of the National System of Protected Areas. A water course that now no longer exists was responsible for the erosion of the sandstone structure- hardened by the presence of iron minerals- created caverns held up by a hundred columns. The formation is part of the park where you can also find a geo-scientific museum, with pieces of different minerals collected in the area. There is an ancient legend that states that the cavernous formation was the dwelling place of a Charrúa chief and that three of the natural caves of the grotto formed his residence, and were adorned with vegetation that grew in the place. Address: Old Route 3, km 238. Telephone: 4360 4473.
