Grutas del Palacio

Grutas del Palacio

Declared a geo-park by Unseco, the Grutas del Palacio are a unique place in Uruguay. They are a geological formation with the appearance of corridors that date back 55 million years and form a part of the National System of Protected Areas. A water course, that now no longer exists, was responsible for the erosion of the sandstone structure- hardened by the presence of iron minerals- and the creation of caverns held up by a hundred columns. The formation is part of the park where you can also find a geo-scientific museum, with pieces of different minerals collected in the area.
