Art in the East

Art in the East

In addition to being a first class tourist destination and an inexhaustible center of night life, Punta del Este is also known as a very important artistic center in Río de la Plata. Although the galleries and museums are scattered throughout the resort, we can identify two well-defined areas with art galleries. One of them is in the port area and the other in La Barra. In museums Casapueblo is highlighted (Panorámica de Punta Ballena Route), where you can visit the artist Carlos Páez Vilaró’s workshop, and the Ralli museum (Los Arrayanes, Beverly Hill neighborhood) where you can find exceptional pieces, including Salvador Dali originals. Finally in Manantiales (Route 104, Km 4.5) you can find the Parque de Esculturas de la Fundación Atchugarry (Atchugarry Foundation’s Sculture Park), which also has a great exhibition hall, and a workshop of one of the most sought after and prestigious artists in Uruguay.

Historical Tour of Piriápolis

Historical Tour of Piriápolis

On Piriápolis promenade you can find the tourist information center of the resort. There you can hire a series of trips that have the life and work of the city’s founder, Francisco Piria, as their center. The historical tour includes a trip on the hills, from where you can see the city and its unique urban layout and then visit the main architectural works (Piria’s castle and the Argentino Hotel, for example) and other landmarks of the resort, such as Pittamiglio’s castle. The other tour has a mystical profile and is linked to Piria’s other passion, alchemy.

Shopping

Shopping

Although all cities have small centers or commercial areas, Punta del Este has developed more in this aspect: asides from having an important sized shopping mall, on street 20 you can find some of the most exclusive stores; along similar lines, Gorlero which used to be the main commercial center in the resort, continues having a market on Street 25. This is one of the most popular places to shop in the peninsula. In recent years Manantiales has also grown, where some of the most important designer stores are placed. Other attractive shopping trips in Maldonado are those of La Barra and Piriápolis promenade

Artesanías

Artesanías

Although all the Uruguayan coast is fairly well frequented by the artisans, in Rocha this activity has become a part of the landscape. On the main street of any of the resorts (La Paloma, La Pedrera, Valizas or Cabo Polonia) it is possible to find small artesian stalls, where you can see intricate work with wood, metal, shells, seeds and fabrics. In Punta del Diablo where it is more organized, there is an established craft fair which is very attractive.
