Should you wish to try fish in Montevideo, the perfect trip ends in Puerto del Buceo. There are stalls that sell fresh fish. It is also a gastronomical center as there is a restaurant that specializes in sea food, although the public can also opt to buy take out. If you are looking to acquire a complete panorama of the Uruguayan parrilla (barbecue), Mercardo del Puerto is the perfect place. This large gastronomic center is located in front of Montevideo port. It has an extensive variety of barbecues that offer the most characteristic products of the country. In addition, it is the birth place of Medio y Medio (half and half) a sparkling drink that has become a tradition in this place.

This department has a good number of the great restaurants in the country. There are the exclusive restaurants in Avenida Pedragosa Sierra (amongst them the prestigious La Bourgogne) and those located in front of the sea in the port area and on the Punta del Este promenade. Moreover, a few kilometers from there in Maldonado city there are several barbecues and restaurants, smaller but of great quality. Finally, almost on the border of Rocha, in the exclusive José Ignacio a hub of very high class restaurants has formed. (La Huella, Marismo, amongst others).

In Punta del Diablo the fishermen are the heart of the town and that is why a visit to the beach where the boats are harbored is not only good for photographs, but also for gastronomic experiences. Along the length of a block there are several fishmongers where the day’s catch is sold and practically anything can be found there. Furthermore, there are small stalls where you can buy fish steaks, preserves and the typical seaweed fritters from this place. In the coastal area, next to the boats there are also open air bars which sell drinks and juices. Location: Playa de los Pescadores.

Wine Routes

There are two big trips for lovers of good wine. One is the Carmelo wine route in the department of Colonia, where you can visit a long series of establishments, from some very big and well-known ones to family wineries. Another great traditional tour called Los caminos del vino (The ways of wine) concentrates on boutique wineries which are mainly located in the departments of Montevideo and Canelones, although in recent years establishments from all over the country have been incorporated.

Maldonado is the place where most of the olive plantations are concentrated. There are two big places in the department. The first begins north of Route 9 (for Route 12 heading to Pueblo Edén) and continues inland to Route 39. There, at the exit of Sierra de los Caracoles, emblematic establishments can be found that tend to receive visitors. Another point of interest is a few kilometers from Pueblo Garzón where there is the possibility of having tastings, walks in the plantations and even tours of the processing plants.

Colonia Cheeses

Nueva Helvecia is known for its European airs, but it is also synonymous with cheese. In this colony of Swiss and German immigrants you can find a large quantity of artisanal cheese shops. Of course, cheese production is not limited to this area, a few kilometers on leaving Colonia on the route that links this city to Montevideo, there is a series small stalls and shops that offer cheeses and homemade sausages. It is really worth making a stop. Carmelo is another very interesting place and, in fact, in this part of Colonia they produce premium quality cheeses.

In this beautiful market there is a vast compendium of gastronomic products from Uruguay. It is a shopping center of products that offers a vast variety of farm products, meats and even drinks.
