Artigas

On the litoral, Artigas has as a great attraction the Rincón de Franquía, a nature reserve especially interesting for nature lovers. Towards the east, on the way to the border with Brazil, you find deposits of amethysts, semi-precious stones that have given rise to great artisanal work.
Artigas Carnival

Artigas Carnival

As every city on the Uruguayan – Brazilian border, the carnival festival has a special rhythm: Samba. In Artigas the traditions and cultures of both countries coexist, which leads to a brotherly festival which reaches a peak in the celebration in February. The streets become the perfect stage to display the joy and color, with its epicenter the official parade of the Samba schools.

Amethysts

Amethysts

A few kilometers from the capital of the department you find the main deposits of agates and amethysts in the country. There are guided tours in the Catalán area, which is around 60 kilometers from the capital of the department. As it is private land the visit must be coordinated beforehand; that’s why it is necessary to call the Tourism Department (telephone 1884 1920). There are dozens of caves which contain the geodes, inside which you find the stone which is then classified and cut for export. The amethysts, their color in the violet range, are the most striking and appreciated. The agates, meanwhile, represent a secondary product compared to the amethysts; a good part of those sold carry the added value of the artisan workshops in Artigas.
